This week I have a special kit for you to share with the children in your life. Every child should know that the most important thing that ever happened on earth was the atonement which took place in the Garden of Gethsemane, because Jesus made it possible for us to repent of our sins and be forgiven. Next, He was crucified, buried, and then resurrected after three days in the tomb. He thus made it possible for us to be resurrected.
One of the most important events of the 19th century was Joseph Smith’s first vision. A young man read a passage of scripture and went to a grove of trees to pray out loud for the first time, and look what happened! He saw God the Father and our Savior Jesus Christ face to face and spoke to them. As a result, the ancient Gospel was restored.
Here’s a kit for you to tell the story to children, and for them to retell it to each other.
I really like what we used to call “flannelboard stories.” Except now you can use magnets, tape, or velcro board (Storyboard) to tell them, and they don’t peel off and fall on the floor. Flannel never really worked very well. Usually you use visual aids to tell a story or illustrate a concept, and since most people are visual learners, they’re pretty effective.
Pretty soon I’ll be putting up a new, improved, and exciting (well, I’m excited at least) website with FREE 2018 theme series book downloads, plus instructions to make your own Storyboard! For this week, I have two story kits that you can use for Christmas. The stories are the Nativity and the Selfish Giant, written by Oscar Wilde. Mr Wilde was a contradiction, living a less than exemplary life, but writing beautiful stories with symbols of Jesus Christ in them.
Children hear that they should be like Jesus Christ, and explaining to them how they can do that should be a priority. What was He like? What things did He do? What qualities did He have that we should emulate? Help children understand more about their Savior with these FREE downloads. They come in pdf form so you can download them onto your computer and use them as needed.
There is a basic story that members of the LDS Church need to understand and believe before they can become part of the true church. That is the story of the First Vision.
The first vision happened when a simple farm boy decided to take the scriptures literally, and ask God which was the true church. It was in the springtime many years ago that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to the boy Joseph Smith and started him on the journey that opened the last dispensation of time.
